KIWI Shoe Aid for Africa in partnership with Planet Aid UKIn 2009 KIWI’s Shoe Aid for Africa appeal collected shoes from 500 schools across Britain. The shoes were distributed by Planet Aid UK's sister organisations in Africa. In total 750 boxes; approx. 43 tons of shoes were donated by students from 500 schools across Britain. This is four times as many shoes as in 2008, when Planet Aid UK and KIWI began our partnership. At the end of October 2009 all the shoe boxes arrived at Planet Aid UK’s warehouse in Corby and on Tuesday 3rd November thirty employees from KIWI's marketing group visited Planet Aid UK to start the sorting of 750 large boxes. The shoes were sorted into childrens and adult shoes for Africa and winter shoes for Pakistan. We had a very good day and managed to sort the first 115 boxes (5500kg shoes). The sorting was well prepared by our warehouse manager, and we got almost twice as much sorted this time as compared to 2008. We want to say thank you to Lodge Park Sports Centre in Corby for lending tables to us which, along with the 'bag holders', made the sorting much more efficient than before.
We also had time to hear Dereck, our African promoter, make a presentation about Humana People to People’s work in Africa and India. Kata, one of our volunteers who has just returned from Namibia, talked about her six months working in Humana’s AIDS prevention program in Namibia. The rest of the shoes were sorted by Planet Aid UK’s own staff and volunteers. All shoes were sorted and sent to Malawi before Christmas.
