Humana People to People

The History

It all started with a group of young people travelling the world in the late 1960s. It was the time of Apartheid in South Africa and the Vietnam war, which was the first real war to be televised. It was a time when travelling outside Europe was a very uncommon adventure. These young people discovered an age-old reality, one not widely known or in any detail, of the vast inequalities between people all over the world. They wanted to share their experiences with others, and to make people realise that this may also be of their concern.
Throughout the 70s and 80s they started what was known in Denmark as ‘The Travelling Folk High School.’ Thousands of youngsters followed in their footsteps. More than 140 countries were visited, and the students brought back experiences not only of deep poverty, but also warm-hearted hospitality and friendship. Wherever they went they got involved, helping to build a school, repairing a bridge or buliding a water pump.
This led to the foundation of the Humana People to People Movement in 1977. The organisation was created to be a practical instrument in fighting poverty, disease and distress, and implementing a way to help the poorest people on our planet: 'FROM PEOPLE TO PEOPLE'.
Today the Federation Humana People to People is a worldwide, well-established organisation working in 45 countries, implementing more than 1,250 projects involving 12 million people and with over 15,000 employees.
